The
OCEAN WEAVERY
The Ocean Weavery is a creative studio and think tank that brings together experts from architecture, design, anthropology, art, writing, … . Playful, explorative, and boundaryless in its approach, the lab thrives on collaboration to work with complex projects, whether large-scale commissions or grassroots initiatives.
At its core, the studio seeks innovative solutions to some of today’s most urgent challenges: the exploitation of both human and natural resources. By weaving together niche expertise and diverse perspectives, the focus is on regenerative practices and the use of local resources to strengthen infrastructure, preserve traditional knowledge, and ensure it continues to flow across generations.
First out were the Black Sheep Project and the Aware Project, where the projects bridge disciplines to explore space, storytelling, and materiality. This is a space where experimentation meets action, where ideas are transformed into tangible solutions, and where creativity is harnessed to support sustainable, meaningful outcomes for the world we inhabit and pass on to our childrens children. Study travels to gather knowledge from other cultures as inspiration for future development.
We are the ancestors of the future.
Besides the Studio, which is located in the nearby village, the Ocean Weavery comes as well with a remote located house, offering a serene artist-in-residence program set within a retreat-like environment. Being not only the remote weaving workshop to the artist, Karina Siegmund, founder of the studio, here, artists, designers, and craftspeople can immerse themselves in creative practice, renting access to the digital handweaving loom, a unique tool for exploring contemporary weaving processes. Prior weaving experience is required to operate the loom; however, for those looking to expand their skills, there is the possibility to optional top-up lessons to help you navigate its intricacies. The Ocean Weavery House is also home to a creative retreat and workshop space, providing artists a nurturing environment to explore their work at the intersection of tradition, technology, and artistic expression in the meeting of other international creatives. We gather around a wooden longtable, having community dinners and a wonderful place for making new friends.
If you are looking for internship, or want to learn to weave, be an ART / Design apprentice, I encourage you to send a mail with your application, as well a motivation letter, and your Vitae. If you are looking for a new path in your way to go, the Ocean Weavery is a beautiful place to find yourself and have a time out from the usual 9-5 business as usual living, with woofing and work away as possibilities to start again.
